The History of Cyber Attacks: A blog detailing the timeline of major cyber attacks
The history of cyber attacks dates back to the early days of the internet, and as technology has evolved, so too has the sophistication and scale of these attacks. Here’s a timeline of some of the most significant and memorable cyber attacks:
- 1988: The Morris Worm was one of the first computer worms to gain significant notoriety. It spread rapidly through the early internet and caused widespread disruptions.
- 1999: The Melissa Virus, a type of malware that infected Microsoft Word documents, caused widespread panic and disrupted businesses and government agencies.
- 2000: The ILOVEYOU virus was one of the most destructive and widespread computer viruses of all time, causing billions of dollars in damages and affecting millions of computers.
- 2002: The Slammer worm was another major malware outbreak that caused widespread disruption, particularly in the banking and financial sectors.
- 2005: The Zotob worm targeted vulnerabilities in Windows 2000 systems, affecting thousands of businesses and causing major disruptions.
- 2007: The Aurora attacks were a series of highly sophisticated cyber attacks targeting major corporations and government agencies in the United States, China, and elsewhere.
- 2010: The Stuxnet worm was a highly sophisticated piece of malware that targeted industrial control systems and caused physical damage to Iran’s nuclear program.
- 2013: The Target breach was one of the largest and most notable data breaches in history, exposing the personal and financial information of tens of millions of customers.
- 2014: The Heartbleed bug was a serious security vulnerability in the widely-used OpenSSL cryptographic software library, which affected millions of websites and other internet-connected systems.
- 2016: The Democratic National Committee was targeted by a sophisticated cyber attack that was later attributed to the Russian government, leading to the release of sensitive emails and other information.
- 2017: The WannaCry ransomware attack was a highly disruptive attack that affected hundreds of thousands of computers in over 150 countries, causing widespread panic and disruption.
- 2019: The Capital One breach was a major data breach affecting more than 100 million customers of the Capital One financial corporation.
